Individual Data Ownership — Documenting Learning

Today I wanted to learn more about the current state of individual data ownership.

Found this video on YouTube:

“7/10 of the most valuable companies in the world are tech companies that either directly generate profit from data or are empowered by data from the core….. google, Facebook and Tencents combined $236 billion in 2018……. Whoever owns the data owns the future…data has immense value butt is centrally controlled and owned.” — Jennifer Zhu Scott from the above linked video.

New things to look into:

  • Brave (browser)

Brave is a free and open-source web browser developed by Brave Software, Inc. based on the Chromium web browser. It blocks ads and website trackers, and provides a way for users to send cryptocurrency contributions in the form of Basic Attention Tokens to websites and content creators. — Wikipedia

  • DuckDuckGo

DescriptionDuckDuckGo is an internet search engine that emphasizes protecting searchers’ privacy and avoiding the filter bubble of personalized search results. DuckDuckGo distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users and by showing all users the same search results for a given search term. — Wikipedia

  • Digi . me

Digi.me and Personal. which merged in 2017 have been widely recognised since 2009 for pioneering individual control over data while enhancing privacy and security. Our distributed user-centric architecture shifts power to individuals by making it easy for people to aggregate their own data and privately share with apps and companies that play by these new rules.

  • UBDI (Universal Basic Data Income)

UBDI helps people make money by sharing anonymous insights from their data that companies need for market research. … Every time a company purchases a study, our users get paid in cash and UBDI points to track their contributions for special rewards and voting rights!
